Total Telecom: Friday Review: Life, the universe, and everything

As new LTE devices and licensing plans hit the headlines, one company claims that the answer to effective LTE network rollout is '42'.

The answer is 42... to the great question of life, the universe and everything, according to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams. And that 'everything' also includes small cells backhaul, I learned through a meeting with a Paris-based start-up this week.

Bluwan's point-to-multipoint millimetre wave (MMW) technology enables it to connect up base stations using spectrum in the 42-GHz band. And according to chief commercial officer Shayan Sanyal, the most cost-effective way to connect up the small cell base stations that operators will require in order to roll out LTE networks in urban areas will be using MMW. Equipment and site rental savings make it a much more cost-effective solution than fibre or microwave backhaul, he insists.
